St. Elisabeth Expands Outpatient Surgery Center with Three New Operating Rooms Equipped with Opragon In-a-Box

St. Elisabeth Hospital in Leipzig, Germany, has expanded its outpatient surgery center with three newly built operating rooms, complementing its existing nine. As part of this investment, the hospital has installed three Opragon In-a-Box systems to support a safe and comfortable surgical environment.

The expansion aims to meet the growing demand for outpatient surgical procedures and to support the ongoing shift toward ambulatory care. With the addition of the new operating rooms, the hospital strengthens its capacity while enabling shorter patient stays.

Supporting a Safe and Efficient Surgical Environment

In the three new operating rooms, Opragon In-a-Box provides a temperature-controlled ultra-clean airflow over the surgical field. This creates a clearly defined clean zone designed to reduce airborne contamination and support infection prevention during procedures.

The system contributes to:

  • A controlled ultra-clean zone at the surgical site
  • High air quality through HEPA filtration
  • Reduced risk of airborne contamination
  • A comfortable working environment for surgical teams

By integrating Opragon In-a-Box into the newly constructed operating rooms, St. Elisabeth ensures that the expanded facility meets modern requirements for both patient safety and staff comfort.

Enabling Growth in Outpatient Procedures

The new operating rooms will be used by multiple specialties, including abdominal surgery, trauma and orthopedic surgery, urology, and gynecology. Procedures such as hernia repairs, knee arthroscopies, removal of implants, treatment of ureteral stones, and laparoscopic interventions will be performed in the outpatient setting.

Construction of the new facility began in January 2025 following a decision in 2024 and was completed after just over one year. In addition to the operating rooms, the project includes 15 preparation and recovery spaces and the recruitment of approximately 20 new staff members across medical, surgical, and anesthesia teams.

Meeting Increasing Demand for Ambulatory Care

The expansion reflects a broader trend in healthcare, where an increasing number of procedures are performed without inpatient stays. By investing in new operating capacity and advanced ventilation solutions, St. Elisabeth is well positioned to meet this demand while maintaining high standards of care.

The installation of three Opragon In-a-Box units in newly built operating rooms demonstrates how modern surgical environments can be designed to combine efficiency, safety, and comfort, supporting both patients and healthcare professionals in an outpatient setting.
