Opragon for Isolation Rooms
Protective ventilation practices and interventions can reduce the concentration of airborne bacteria and viruses and thus reduce the overall exposure to room occupants. Opragon, with its patented temperature-controlled airflow (TcAF), has a unique ability to move air with very high energy efficiency, which has been shown to be effective to increase patient safety in especially operating rooms. TcAF can also be used in other rooms to manage the airflow to reduce the risk of patient and staff illness. A concept is currently in development for Airborne Infection Isolation (“AII”) rooms with promising results.
In a SIMULIA simulation made by airflow simulation expert Dassault Systemes*, it has been demonstrated that the Opragon is able to create an “air shield” around the head of the patient. This can play two important safety roles: firstly, by reducing the risk for medical staff while working around the head of the patient, and secondly by keeping the patient safe from airborne pathogens.
Like the scientifically proven Opragon systems, the concept simulated uses temperature modification strategies to push infectious particles downward in a robust, quiet, and energy-efficient way. The particles are then removed from the room with outlets near the floor. As with all Opragon systems, staff or in this case even the patient may set any desired temperature for best comfort and the system automatically adapts.
Opragon can be used both with negative and positive pressure rooms, which means that this application can be useful both for patients that are infected and those that are immunocompromised.
