Opragon: The Innovation Verified and Validated at Gävle Hospital

Nearly 15 years ago, Gävle Hospital made a decision that would transform its operating environment. A new ventilation system called Opragon, developed by a then-small company in Lund, was installed as a pilot project. Designed to ensure ultra-clean air in operating rooms, Opragon has since become an integral part of the hospital’s surgical department. Recently, the hospital inaugurated its latest addition—a hybrid operating room equipped with advanced imaging technology from Philips, which is also fitted with Opragon.

Avidicare visited the surgical department and met with Maria Heimdahl, an operating room nurse who has worked there since the Opragon system was installed. With a background in radiology nursing, Maria shared insights into the department’s work and discussed both its challenges and achievements.

“For a medium-sized regional hospital, we perform a lot of specialized surgeries,” Maria explained. “We handle advanced vascular surgery, robotic surgery, and procedures in gynecology, urology, gastrointestinal surgery, and orthopedics, among others. We also perform emergency surgeries, including trauma and cesarean sections. The breadth of our work is what makes it so rewarding to work here.”

The decision to equip the entire surgical department with Opragon came after the system was first tested in a preparation room. At that time, the department faced challenges with high CFU (colony-forming units) levels, which posed infection risks, particularly during implant surgeries. Carina Fröberg, the department’s operations manager, recalls that they initially used mobile air purifiers to improve the environment. However, when the hospital began a construction project, they became open to exploring new solutions. Opragon turned out to be the innovation they needed.

“We were dealing with poor CFU values and starting a construction project,” Carina said. “That’s when we saw an opportunity to try something new. Opragon stood out, and we decided to take the chance. We wanted to improve our workflows and reduce infection risks.”

Maria describes today’s operating room environment as straightforward and functional. “It’s cool and comfortable for us while we work, and at the same time, we use active warming for the patients. The rooms are truly pleasant,” she said, adding that new hires and temporary staff often comment positively on the facilities.

A key feature of the operating rooms is their flexibility. While all the rooms are equipped to handle infection-sensitive procedures, they are specialized for different types of surgeries to minimize the need for moving equipment. However, each room can meet the requirements for ultra-clean air when needed.

Carina also reflected on the impact of the ventilation system on their operations. “We have excellent CFU metrics, and staff satisfaction is generally high. Absenteeism in central operations is low, between 3.5 and 5 percent,” she explained.

The department’s latest investment is the hybrid operating room, which Maria said has brought new possibilities. “The old hybrid room needed upgrading, so we chose to install the Philips Azurion Flexarm. The new hybrid room is also equipped with Opragon, ensuring that the entire room meets the requirements for ultra-clean air. During emergency procedures, such as invasive vascular surgery, it’s reassuring to know that we maintain such a high standard of hygiene,” Maria said.

Looking to the future, Maria emphasized that the department’s development will be driven by its operational needs. However, they remain committed to staying at the forefront of technical innovation and improving patient care.

When asked what advice she would give to other hospitals considering a switch to Opragon but hesitating to leave traditional systems behind, Maria laughed and replied: “Why wouldn’t you take the leap? Opragon works seamlessly with advanced equipment and is a system that truly delivers.”

With nearly 15 years of success using Opragon, Gävle Hospital can proudly say they have been pioneers in their field. Their experiences demonstrate how a well-thought-out technical solution can make a significant difference—not only in ensuring patient safety but also in improving staff satisfaction and creating a more efficient work environment.
