Forth in Hässleholm: Advancing Orthopedic Surgery with Sustainable Ventilation Technology

The development of Framtidens ortopedi i Hässleholm (Forth) represents an important step forward in Sweden’s orthopedic care infrastructure. Designed to accommodate six new operating theaters, the facility combines clinical performance requirements with a long-term sustainability perspective, an approach increasingly prioritized within Region Skåne.

As a long-standing ventilation partner to the region, Avidicare is contributing to the project with its energy-efficient ultra-clean ventilation system – Opragon, supporting both infection prevention and responsible energy use in critical environments. Operating theatres are among the most technically demanding areas of a hospital and among the most energy-intensive. The Forth project seeks to address this by integrating systems that deliver reliable air cleanliness at operation while reducing environmental impact.

“The whole building will be certified according to the latest Swedish environmental regulations – Miljöbyggnad. The Opragon solution from Avidicare contributes with excellent infection prevention and comfort without excessive use of energy, which is a key to reaching our goals”,

Oskar Lindegren, healthcare lead at Skanska Sweden AB.

The Opragon ventilation concept has already been implemented across the newly completed operating departments at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö. The ORs in Malmö have reported very low microbial contamination levels (cfu/m3) alongside improved flexibility in daily operation demonstrating that high cleanliness performance can be achieved in parallel with energy efficiency.

Forth builds on this established experience, applying it to a specialised orthopaedic context where both sterility and process stability are paramount.

”When it comes to orthopedics, we know that you cannot compromise on cleanliness. To additionally allow the surgical team use of the full room along with improved comfort from a cooler center and a warmer periphery we create a combination many orthopedic surgeons love. To offer this to the world-class team in Hässleholm makes us very proud”,

Peter Höjerback, CEO at Avidicare

As more healthcare providers seek to modernise surgical facilities, solutions that combine infection control, flexibility and energy performance are becoming essential rather than optional. Forth serves as a clear example of how these objectives can be realized in practice.

The Avidicare team is available to share performance data, energy-use models and operational experiences from both f ex Sweden and the Netherlands with organizations currently evaluating ventilation strategies for new builds or retrofits. Contact us for a free design solution for your project.
