On the 54th Annual Conference of the German Society for Biomedical Engineering (BMT 2020), this year a virtual event, Prof Dr Clemens Bulitta et al presented two papers.
The background to the first was a clinical validation of the efficacy of temperature-controlled ventilation system (TcAF) in the OR to reduce surgical site infections.
The study was performed during live surgeries in one operating theater before and after a TcAF system Opragon had been installed. No changes were made to any other parameters relevant to infections and patients were of similar status. Endpoints for clinical outcome were length of stay and infection rates (SSI). A retrospective analysis of 1.000 total joint arthroplasties before and another 1.000 after installation of Opragon was performed.
A decrease of infectious complications (SSI) from 3.3% to 1.1% was shown, together with shorter hospital stay.
